Today I am sharing a stunning make and photo tutorial from DT member Katy Leitch.
This beautiful tag is titled – Clockwork Heart – Here is Katy’s tutorial:
My immediate thought when I saw this fab tag set was faux rust, but I wanted to do something less grungy and brighter, but still with metallic effects. I worked in one of my favourite colour palettes – turquoise and silver with a pop of red.
Products used:
Samantha K: Cog Tag, set of small cogs, 4.5cm heart (available this weekend)
Acrylic paints in cobalt blue, turquoise, red, Paynes Grey and silver (I used DecoArt)
DecoArt Media: Texture Sand Paste, Modeling Paste – White, Gesso – White
Andy Skinner Stencil:
Andy Skinner Stamps:
Permanent black inkpad
Krylon silver pen
Here’s how I made it:
1 Paint the back Cobalt Teal acrylic then stencil clocks with Turquoise acrylic. When dry, stamp the industrial image in black permanent ink.
2 Seal the front panel and a selection of loose cogs with white gesso. Add areas of Texture Sand Paste with your finger.
3 Paint silver and then add a light wash (watered down paint) of Paynes Grey – the watery paint catches in and accentuates the texture sand.
4 Apply a layer of modelling paste to the heart. Dry briefly with a heat tool until the surface starts to set then stamp into the paste. Make sure you clean your stamp straight away. Leave the heart to dry naturally.
5 When dry, paint the heart red then dry brush with silver paint to highlight the texture (you could also use gilding wax for this).
6 Assemble the tag, adding the heart and some of the loose cogs over the existing cog design for dimension. Finish by edging with silver Krylon pen.
I’m Sure you’ll agree Katy’s tag is fabulous and very striking 🙂 Why not give it a go yourself? If you do, don’t forget to let us know over in the Mixed media and Crafting group that you were inspired by Katy and share your make 🙂
